The top 20 Insurtechs invested show a parallelism with the rest of startups in a clear predominance of North America as the most invested region.
Insurers show certain bias when investing
The top 5 investments in terms of raised money are mainly found in the European continent, following the behaviour of the Insurtech total funding received in 2021, where Europe stands out.
Something remarkable is the fact that within the top 20 of Insurtechs invested, just 2 companies are dedicated to the Health Line of Business. This is in stark contrast to the data registered in 2020, a year marked by the prevalence of Health companies, mainly due to the needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic. This does not mean that Health will no longer be a focus of investment or of advances within the Insurance industry (in fact, an overview of the complete sample of Insurtechs shows the opposite).
Rather, insurers’ investment priorities are moving beyond the sanitary crisis. In this sense, in 2021, insurers were more interested in businesses related to the Commercial and Cross Lines of Business, especially for activities related to New Distribution models, as well as creating new customized insurance products or the application of emerging technologies in the claims management processes.
